Team Hurricane

Team Hurricane originated in 2002 when we added a fine well bred male Chesapeake Bay Retriever to our family that with the help of some very good people, we trained and titled. Champion Del Brave Crossfire Hurricane WD, CGC, aka "Cane" who crossed the Rainbow Bridge in November of 2014. In 2005 we made another addition to our family.  Crossfire Sammy's Waborita, CGC . aka "Rita" who crossed the Rainbow Bridge in June 2018.Her breeding was awesome!. I've been priveledged to be around Chesapeake Bay Retrievers since the late 60's when introduced to "Duke", a hard charging, no-nonsense, working retriever. Ever since I've had a Chesapeake or 2 by my side. I've been involved with this breed extensively. I was training with some very well known people and handlers. Good or bad, I learned various training techniques from which we tweeked and fine tuned to meet our needs. After having a bad experience with a deceitful trainer who purposely hurt our dog we decided to let our young family enjoy our dogs too. Besides, they were already hooked and helping me train, handle, and maintain these magnificent animals. A few years later we put together a breeding producing quality dogs to say the least. We kept two pups ourselves a male, Xfirehurricane's Beast of Birden aka "Red"and Xfirehurricane's Cara Mia aka "Tish".

Our primary function with our dogs is loving, training, hunting, showing, and occasionally watching them be the rascals they can be. Red is my meat dog his ears are his talent and he does his job in the field as well as off. He protects. We enjoy having fun with our dogs and like to train them . We feel the loss of those of our Dogs that are no longer with us.

Our Training Grounds

Our Training Grounds provide excellent water features for the beginning pup to finishing stages in their development. Our kennel is just across Penitencia Creek Road through the access gate. As you can see in the picture to the right, it is a gold mine for people who train their dogs themselves and who like to set up multiple land & water marks or a blind retrieve in and out and back in the water. I grew up working dogs here and lived here most of my life.

Our Philosophy

We believe that a dog is only as good as it's breeding, training or trainer. One should never blame the dog or believe the negative stereotypes that have been placed on this breed. Not everyone deserves to own a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. You get what you put into these dogs. Their uses are limitless. There is no relationship stronger or greater bond that these dogs give to their masters.

The Old Man

At 69 I can still walk the Mendota mud and tread through the rice patties. I'm proud to say I am one of so very few to have ever skulled the Gray Ghost Slough of Alviso in my younger days . I've hunted since I was 5 years old and have had too many dogs to count . I attribute what I've learned from my Uncle Frank Dutra Silvera who was a English Pointer owner and upland bird hunter . His Elhue Pointers were awesome . His horsemanship was second to none and as a very young boy I learned to ride and handle pack animals . For a few years I ran pack animals on my own and hunted where no modern man has ever set ground . I am so very fortunate to have endured this life although hard at times. I am still learning and continue to develop my interests in the ecology and waterfowl management areas as well as enjoying my family. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is the greatest dog in the world. No other dog can do what these magnificent animals can do in extreme conditions and I truly believe that the bond these dogs have to their owners is what makes them so very special. Our dogs are registered with the United States Service Dog Registry.

I'm probably not the best dog trainer and have a lot to learn . I started training dogs with my Uncle Frank in the late 50's and have hunted under several very fine dogs in the past . I once thought that the field trial and hunt test games would be fun however after my dog Cane was tortured by a trainer we trusted along with the fact the dog club I belonged to at the time did nothing to support us, I decided to veer away from people and associations that do not value ethics and the breed I love.  Therefore we now focus our efforts on loving, training, hunting and showing our dogs.

I hunt the very best properties that both California & Oregon have to offer and thank those responsible for allowing us this priviledge. Please try "Kerley's Sporting Adventure's" for a trip of a lifetime and enjoy the company of professionals who know how to treat people.

Thanks to Stephanie, Eric & Dana for putting up with sometimes a perfectionist ........I am proud of all of you . I love you !

The Leader of our pack

Stephanie is the Alpha in our pack. She is a leader. Her hard work being a provider, wife, mother, chef, and multi-talented individual has only added to the quality of life for her family. Being a Gemologist and owning her own jewelry business that we started together so long ago, she custom designed Chesapeake Bay Retriever Jewelry for her husband and Dana. She worked in the industry for many years and was at the top of her field. She acquired the knowledge that led her to eventually work in the appraisal of fine gemstones and precious metals. She studied at the Gemological Institute of America and her work has been presented on the front page of Gems & Gemology Spring 2007. She designs and strings pearls with her husband and has put together some very fine pieces and custom rosaries. My wife puts up with a lot and is a good dog trainer. I am lost without her presence. We rebuilt our home after a fire and our lives changed. Survivors do.
